Welcoming warm atmosphere.Highly recommended

It is some time now since we spent 6 nights at Marston Lodge, but I absolutely agree with the points on which Martin Goldberg was dissatisfied. The proprietor was - in our opinion - a pain in the neck (he tried to impose activity suggestions on ourselves as well, which - although one walk turned out to be very pleasant - were delivered in a most imperious, even arrogant, manner)Our email to the owner - several days in advance, enquiring what time was suitable for our arrival - was ignored, but on our arrival at 2pm he seemed visibly peeved and asked us to go amuse ourselves for a couple of hours while our room was cleaned (I had to lug a big suitcase back down the steep steps into the car).Even two hours did not suffice, however, since we found a half-eaten apple in our room (full marks for healthy eating, I suppose...). Some days later we saw a male cleaner vacuuming a room while holding a baby with his left hand. (a new meaning for left holding the baby - lest it escape with the bathwater, maybe?). In view of the owner's recently professed antipathy toward children, this surprises us in retrospect, but doubtless by acting so, the cleaner avoided causing damage! Our room at the back was very cramped, so as to accommodate the toilet, which was even more cramped, and had extensive mould on its walls. And at the rear of the house, we were exposed to the racket of nocturnal incursions by foxes into the chicken pens, with the owner's dogs giving full and noisy chase, and finally the owner (at 2am!) aiming a powerful searchlight through our window, as if to hold us under suspicion for harboring the foxes as they escaped from his dogs. Oh, and one minute early or late to breakfast - and guests were publicly scolded! What surprises me is the preponderance of positive reviews on TripAdvisor, which is what led us to make our unfortunate booking in the first place, and definitely raised our expectations to what, in retrospect, can be seen as an un-realistic level. (It strikes me that there may be some manipulation going on here). For Martin Goldberg, all may not be lost. Under the terms of the UK Consumer Credit Act, Section 75, clients that are dissatisfied with goods purchased or services provided are granted redress against the credit card company and are legally permitted to place the amount due in suspense (even up to a few months retrospectively) while negotiations with the vendor (or service provider) proceed. What I find most objectionable is the locking up by the proprietor of Martin's family's valuables. It seems very curious that he can do that, but yet ask folks to leave their room keys in an unsecured open drawer in the main foyer when they leave the house To my mind that looks uncannily near to fraud - and if merely to secure a deposit, it seems like using cannons to shoot at sparrows. And all this despite a customer's intense dissatisfaction with the product as compared with the advertising. My wife and I were equally dissatisfied, and somehow we just stuck it out. But now the chickens come home to roost.... Although Mr Goldberg may not have used a UK credit card, he might be able to refer his situation to his own credit card company on the basis that he had transacted in the UK (I have been able several times to persuade my Swiss credit card company to afford me the same accommodation, even though they are not compelled under Swiss law to do so)For this reason, and given the protection afforded by Section 75, there is no reason to withhold a credit card number for the purposes of a deposit, though I would recommend that the amount be limited to the first nights room rate only. But Martin is right: avoid the (for him near-eponymous!) Lodge Hotel at all costs!

Rude hosts, room had no terrace as advertised on website, beds uncomfortable, old fashioned, didn't see any other guest apart from one couple at breakfast.... , strange place

Disappointing, thought room had access to a terrace as stated on booking but there wasn'tRoom smelt musty too. Only saw 2 other guests in 2 days and found hosts a bit rude and offhand, not helpful at all. Would not stay there again or recommend to anyone else!

Beware, I paid 90 deposit, and had cancel 2 months in advance and was promised a refund on my card. After 2 months of no refund they claimed they could not let the room ( rooms must be poor) and no refund would be given. Most unreasonable attitude and would not meet me half way. T Stacey. Oxford.
